In April 1962, Cosmonautics Day was officially established in our country by decree of the Bureau of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union.
The idea for the holiday was proposed by the second pilot cosmonaut in the Soviet Union, German Titov.
In 1969, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale changed its name and on 12 April designated World Aviation and Space Day. And in 2011, this day also became International Day of Human Space Flight on the initiative of the UN General Assembly. The resolution officially confirming this fact was signed by more than sixty states.
The race to send the first man into space began in October 1957, when the Soviet unmanned vehicle Sputnik 1 was the first to orbit the planet. Later that year, Sputnik 2 was launched with Moscow’s mixer Laika on board. Three years later, Yuri Gagarin made his historic escape.
The first astronauts were jet pilots. They were used to dangerous, exhausting flights and knew how to parachute and land. But even for experienced specialists, space travel posed a deadly threat. About half of the 100 unmanned missions that preceded Gagarin’s flight ended in failure, and before Vostok 1 no one was sure a person could go into space and return to Earth alive. Therefore, three previous reports on Gagarin’s escape into space were previously prepared. The first – “Successful”, the second with a request for help in the search if he falls on another country’s territory or in the world’s oceans, and the third – “Tragic” if Gagarin dies.
After completing a revolution around the earth, 10:55:34, the ship ended its flight. Due to a fault in the braking system, the Gagarin disembarkation vehicle did not land at the planned location, 110 km from Volgograd, but in the Saratov region, near the village of Smelovka.
After his flight, Yuri Alekseevich became a world celebrity. He was welcomed in most cities in the Soviet Union, but there was also a world tour called “Mission of Peace”. The astronaut visited a large number of countries and received personal congratulations from the heads of state. On the far side of the moon, one of the craters is named after Yuri Gagarin.
The first orbital flight was an event on a planetary scale and, perhaps, the only one that managed to unite so many people in a single happy impulse. It was a victory for reason, and Gagarin dedicated it to the next generation, whom he asked to take care of our common home:
“After orbiting the earth in a satellite ship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. Humans, we will preserve and enhance this beauty, and not destroy it! …”
Space has always been and remains one of humanity’s most exciting mysteries. Its distance tirelessly attracts scientists of all generations, the starry sky fascinates with its beauty. At the moment, more than 500 people have already visited space, but it has only revealed a small part of its secrets to us and continues to excite the best senses.
On this day, we congratulate all the workers in the space industry, cosmonauts, astronomers, engineers, programmers – all who bring humanity closer to the stars!
In connection with the ever-increasing interest in the subject of space research, Roscosmos 2021 launched the TV channel “First space“, whose on-air content is news from the space industry, popular science programs about the structure of the universe, thematic feature films and documentaries.” First Space “combines a scientific approach and accessibility to storytelling. Both older and younger generations of viewers will like it.
