Yan Novikov, CEO of Almaz-Antey’s Air Defense Group, announced on April 25 that the S-500 air defense system was launched in mass production. The S-500 Prometheus system has no analogues in the world and will soon be the basis for Russia’s space defense.
The first S-500 brigade was received by troops from the 15th Special Forces Army in VKS in October 2021. For six months, Prometheus has reliably controlled and protected the air and outer space over Moscow. The second brigade set will take up combat duty during the first half of 2022. The training of specialists is in its fifth year.
Earlier, the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Defense reported that the latest air defense missile defense system S-500 performed live test firing at a high-speed ballistic target at Kapustin Yar’s training ground, confirming the specified performance characteristics and high reliability.
“Prometheus” is designed to destroy all existing and future space data attacks from a potential enemy – throughout the speed range, at a distance of up to 600 km and altitudes up to 200 km, and in some sources – up to 400 km above the earth. On November 15, 2021, an unnamed Russian ground-based missile defense system hit the old Soviet satellite Tselina-D at an altitude of 500 km with a single missile.
Most of the technical features of Prometheus are secret, but the Western world immediately noticed the power of the Russian Prometheus, which can “shoot down satellites, hypersonic missiles and more.”
Military Watch considers the non-existent strategic bomber B-21 Raider, hypersonic missiles and the US SR-72 reconnaissance and attack aircraft as possible targets for the S-500 system.
I think this list lacks the current space shuttle (bomber) from the Pentagon Boeing X-37, Minuteman III ICBM, as well as US naval and air-based nuclear cruise missiles. Russia’s capacity for Prometheus is a serious concern for the United States and NATO.
Reliable shield, irresistible sword
Prometheus can hit ballistic, aerodynamic targets and cruise missiles within a radius of about 600 km and is still not a continuation, development or replacement of previous generations of Russian S-400 air defense systems or A-135 missile defense systems. The main task of the latest system is the destruction of medium-range ballistic missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles in the last part of their orbit.
Judging by information in open sources, the S-500’s main specialization is the protection and defense of the country’s space boundaries from a possible nuclear missile attack from near space. Hence the maximum engagement altitude of 200 km, which is incomparable even with the S-400 Triumph system, and the ability to hit targets flying at speeds up to 7 km / sec or over 25,000 km / h.
Unlike the S-400 and S-300, which deliver a barrage of four missiles with a range of up to 250 km against targets at altitudes from 10 meters to 30 km, the launch vehicle of the mobile Prometheus carries two surfaces with ultra-long range -to air missiles.
The anti-aircraft missile regiments from the Russian air forces have been re-equipped with modern S-400 systems by more than 70 percent. Deliveries of the latest Prometheus to the troops will not drive the triumphs to the background – they will make the layered defense of the air defense system denser and deeper.
Note that Russia is the only country in the world whose air defenses are built according to the stratified principle, starting with short-range man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems of the type “Verba” or “Igla” (destruction area – up to 6 km at altitudes up to 5 km).
In the second level – calculations of the medium-range air defense system for caterpillars “Buk” and “Tor”, “Pantsir-SM” (range of destruction – up to 40 km at altitudes up to 15 km), in the third – air defense system S-300 and air defense system S-400 (maximum range and altitude – 250 km and 30 km respectively). The latest S-500 system will harmoniously complement the conditional three levels with the fourth – the space.
As part of the state armament program until 2025, it is planned to purchase five S-500 brigade sets, which will be combined with the A-135 missile defense system in central Russia. In the future, the ground version of the S-500 may become a ship version.
In accordance with the “Prompt Global Strike” concept, the United States can send up to 6,000 Tomahawks, including those with nuclear warheads, to the enemy in an ointment. In a situation of military conflict with Russia, the American term loses all meaning.
The sudden use of cruise missiles and ICBMs by the Pentagon and NATO in the territory of the Russian Federation or Russian troops in Ukraine, Syria, the South Caucasus and the countries of Central Asia will be reflected in air defense systems. At the same time, the attacker will retaliate with hypersonic missiles, cruise missiles and intercontinental missiles.
Russia is the most powerful nuclear power in the world and has a high-tech air defense and a missile defense shield. Western “partners” should not forget this.
The S-500 Prometheus system is a new technological breakthrough on a cosmic scale, Moscow’s response to the challenges of the times. Russia threatens no one, but remembers the recent history of Iraq, Yugoslavia, Libya, cynically fired at a safe distance by the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.
