Today, speaking of space travel, we are content with science fiction – a flight to the planet closest to Earth has not yet been realized. But with the help of imagination and mathematics we can assume that in the universe, apart from us, there is life and, possibly, intelligent life. Who knows if our space neighbors have solved the mystery of moving through space? Can they, like the Star Trek team, travel in a spaceship to different corners of the universe? We will probably not know the answer to this question in the near future, but researchers already have something to say. Researchers at the Limitade Space Institute, funded by the US Department of Defense (DARPA), have discovered a real warp bubble in space. This event marks a breakthrough in the evolution of spacecraft that can move faster than light – the presence of the Alcubierre bubble follows from some solutions to Einstein’s equations. In addition, the theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre suggests that we can really create a device that accelerates to superluminal speed.
The Alcubierre bubble was first mentioned in 1994. It was then that the theoretical physicist worked on the idea of a warp drift – through mathematical calculations. He suggested that some spacecraft could travel at superluminal speeds without violating the laws of physics. The idea of the Mexican mathematician quickly came into contact with researchers, but some considered it an insoluble issue.
Now the authors of a study published in the European Physical Journal C, led by ex-NASA warp drive specialist Harold White, have suggested that creating a real warp drive will require less energy and materials than Alcubierre thought.
So we’re on the verge of a warp drift, and unlike the amazing Star Trek variations, there really will be no need for an exotic substance to make it work! Interestingly, Alcubierre came up with a mathematically sound solution for creating a warp unit using a space-time bubble.
The Mexican scientist believed that a “warp bubble” should surround the spacecraft, which would largely not move in space, but in space-time distorted by the engine of the spacecraft itself. This bubble was recently discovered by scientists.

So, Alcubierre’s torsion motor could theoretically move at furious speeds using a special space propulsion system that would not violate the laws of physics as we know them, and especially the laws of the speed of light. In fact, we do not need a spaceship that moves in space, but the space-time that surrounds the spacecraft – it is distorted and displaced.
However, the materials needed to manufacture such an engine, as well as the power required, have always made this approach only theoretical and completely inconceivable for potential applications.
As often happens in the history of science, the discovery of the warp bubble was an accident. No one thought about Alcubierre’s calculations – scientists conducted experiments with negative energy on a nanostructure. In particular, they analyzed Casimir effect is the force of attraction that extends between two uncharged parallel plates and two conductive plates.

His results show that “a viable nanostructure in the lab can create bubble deformation through a similar negative energy distribution in vacuum as needed.” Interestingly, in a similar report, The Debrief, researchers (funded by DARPA) take a more realistic approach, without sticking to theoretical concepts.
The report mentions that the distribution of negative energy density in some way corresponds to initial requirements: “To create negative energy, an imbalance between particles can occur. The mass will hold the particle while the other will be the negative energy in the space-time bubble. “
In the future, the team intends to develop a testable “warp-drive vehicle” for testing purposes. In other words, we are talking about a nanoscale device that enables us to determine the qualitative relationship between measurements and those given by Alcubierre. However, some scientists are concerned – such a ship will not be able to cope with superluminal speed, as it will lead to its destruction. Also, do not forget the effect of time extension – it slows down as we move faster.
