Roscosmos published classified documents on the first human spacewalk

March 18, 2020, AEX.RU – 55 years ago, on March 18, 1965, an event of great civilizational significance took place: for the first time in the world, a man left the cabin of a spacecraft and entered outer space. This is stated in the message from Roscosmos.

“Attention! The man went into space. It was these words that went down in world history as a message about the first manned spacewalk, and the first to convey this message was the commander of the spacecraft Voskhod-2 Pavel Belyaev. Exactly 55 years ago, the March 18, 1965, the Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov made a spacewalk, this epoch-making event marked humanity’s next step towards the universe, Alexei Arkhipovich’s heroism, dedication and professionalism forever inscribed his name in the history of astronautics.

The Voskhod rocket with the crew of the Voskhod-2 spacecraft was launched on March 18, 1965 at 10:00 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Alexei Leonov left the spacecraft 1 hour and 35 minutes after launch (at the beginning of the second orbit). He was in outer space for 23 minutes and 41 seconds, and outside the airlock in outer space – 12 minutes and 9 seconds. During the return to the ship, Alexei Leonov experienced difficulties, as the swollen suit did not pass through the airlock in Voskhod. Only the release of the oxygen pressure in the spacesuit and Alexei Arkhipovich’s heroic efforts made it possible to then complete the flight safely, Roscosmos noted.

To enter outer space, the Berkut spacecraft was developed with a multilayer hermetic shell, by means of which overpressure was maintained inside, which ensured the astronaut’s normal life. Outside, the space suit had a special white coating to protect it from the thermal effects of sunlight and from any mechanical damage to the sealed part of the space suit. Both crew members were equipped with spacesuits so that the spacecraft commander could, if necessary, assist the astronaut who went into space.

The first spacewalk, made by Alexei Arkhipovich Leonov, became another starting point for world cosmonautics. Largely thanks to the experience from this flight, space travel is now a standard part of long missions to the International Space Station. Today, during spacewalks, scientific research, repair work, installation of new equipment on the station’s outer surface, launch of small satellites and a number of other operations are carried out.

“In this regard, State Corporation Roscosmos continues to work to declassify and publish historical evidence for the early space age. Today we draw your attention to a set of declassified documents that tell about the implementation of the program for the first human spacewalk in the world. domestic rocket and space technology: signatures and notes made by the chief designer of OKB-1 (now Rocket and Space Corporation Energia, part of State Corporation Roscosmos) Sergey Pavlovich Korolev, President of the State Commission (and formerly – Director NII-88 (now Central Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, part of Roscosmos State Corporation) Georgy Alexandrovich Tyulin, representatives of the country’s leadership and other prominent figures in Soviet science and industry, “noted Roscosmos.

State Corporation Roscosmos expresses its gratitude and gratitude to the archives of the President of the Russian Federation, the staff of the Russian State Archives of Scientific and Technical Documentation and personal advisers Natalia Vladimirovna Selyukina, the archives of RSC Energia named after SP Korolev and the management of TsNIIMash for providing materials and help in preparing the publication.
