From October 11 to October 16, VDNKh Cosmonautics and Aviation Center and Slovo Museum of Slavic Literature will host thematic excursions, educational lectures and Space Thursday. Participation in all activities is free, upon registration.
October 11 at 18:00 and 19:00 The Cosmonautics and Aviation Center will host thematic excursions “People and Space” dedicated to the anniversary of the first successful launch of the R1 long-range ballistic missile designed by SP Drottning. In the exhibition of the center you can see models of launch vehicles, ships and satellites, rocket engines and automatic interplanetary stations, each of which in different years was a real breakthrough in the history of practical astronautics. But who worked to turn these bold ideas into reality? Who ensured the first successes of the Soviet space program? On excursions, guests learn about the amazing people who have done everything to make space travel possible.
October 13 at 4:00 p.m A sightseeing tour for visitors with limited mobility will be held at the same location. The guides will introduce the participants to the history of space and air travel, show unique rockets, spaceships, airplanes and helicopters. The Cosmonautics and Aviation Center is equipped with special elevators, which makes the tour not only interesting, but also comfortable for all visitors.
The same day in 19:00 the center will host a space on Thursday themed “Time and Calendar”. This is a new activity format: participants will not only have a lecture from an invited specialist, but also a lively discussion with each other on prepared questions. Visitors discuss each of them for three minutes and then change interlocutors. This time, visitors will talk with astrophysicist, science popularizer Vsevolod Lander about how the calendar and time counting systems were developed, why there are seven days in a week and 360 degrees in a circle, why leap days appear in the calendars of some countries, while others have leap months, what is a leap second and what does quantum mechanics have to do with it.
October 14 at 4:00 p.m there will be a sightseeing tour of the Cosmonautics and Aviation Center for hearing-impaired visitors. The story of the most important milestones in the history of Russian cosmonautics will be accompanied by sign language translation. A similar excursion will take place this day at 19:00 at the Slovo Museum of Slavic Literature with translation into sign language.
October 15 at 12:00 The Cosmonautics and Aviation Center will host a Saturday coffee at Cosmos on the theme “What is dark matter and how do you search for it?”. Host – Vsevolod Lander. Modern research methods make it possible to study the parameters of dark matter, describe its properties and even look for dark galaxies – objects where there is almost no ordinary baryonic matter. But until now, the physical nature of dark matter is not clear to us, and many astronomers question its very existence. Participants will talk about how and why astronomers and physicists look for dark matter and what results have already been achieved.
October 15 at 4:00 p.m the center will also host a lecture “Planetary geology. Under the clouds of Venus. Lecturer is Yulia Kuznetsova, candidate of geographical sciences, author and host of geological and environmental podcasts. She will tell how the surface of Venus is arranged and where the basalt plains come from, what Venus’ atmosphere consists of and how this affects the processes on the planet’s surface. Participants also get to learn what tessera is.
October 16 at 4:00 p.m the center will host a lecture “They are taken as astronauts. The main stages of selection for the cosmonaut corps. It will be read by Aleksey Salnikov, leading researcher of the “Physiology of Accelerations and Artificial Gravity” laboratory of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a participant in the 14-day “ESKIZ” experiment as a crew doctor, and a participant in the recruitment to the department of the Cosmonaut Training Center Alexei Salnikov. He will tell you what requirements apply to future cosmonauts, how to participate in the selection for the cosmonaut corps, what stages this selection consists of.
